A 78 year old white female, diagnosed with diabetes in 1978. In 1999 she went into renal failure, her mental status decreased. She was put on dialysis.
In May 2005 she bit a hang nail on her left middle finger that got infected. Doctors initially put her on IV "levaquin" and removed her fingernail. It did not heal. They cut off part of her finger.
After months, the Doctors informed the family they had to cut her arm off just below the shoulder. A patient who had been to our facility suggested the family seek adjunctive therapy. Patient came to our facility in August 2005.
On her initial visit her finger had much green discharge from the amputation site. She had incredible swelling of the hand and redness extending into the lower arm. While receiving Hyperbaric Oxygen treatments, her cognitive ability improved. The wound became substantially smaller, the discharge minimal and had changed from green to light yellow. She also started to expel urine.
The patient had 122 HBO treatments before they had to leave. The family was glad to "have the old Betty Mae back". Hopefully, they will continue to a successful outcome.
